Here is a super simple and cute idea for making bunny ears with materials you are likely to have around the house or can buy at your local thrift store for next to nothing.
What you will need:
- T-shirt scraps in assorted colours
- Small pieces of fabric for the front and back of the ears (about 20cm x 20cm).
- Piece of thin cardboard (about 20cm x 20cm).
- Thread
- Glue
- Scissors
Step by step:
{1} Cut three strips (4cm by 60cm) from the t-shirt scraps. I used different colours for each strip but they could all be the same. For a perfect fit measure your child’s head and add 10cm, that would be the length of your strips. If your scraps are not big enough to get strips the length you need simply sew a few strips together.
{2} Lay the strips on top of each other and hold one end with a safety pin. Put a heavy object on that end to hold it in place and plait the strips. Then stitch both ends to avoid the plait coming undone.
{3} Cut two bunny ears from the piece of cardboard (using this template). Then cut two ears from the fabric you selected for the front of your bunny ears and two from the fabric you selected for the back using the same template (slightly larger than the cardboard template to allow for seams).
{4} Pin each front fabric ear on top of the back fabric ear with the right sides together. Machine stitch around each ear, leaving the base of the ears open. Turn the ears right side out and place the cardboard ears inside them. If the cardboard is sticking out of the ears, trim it with some scissors.
{5} Fold the sides of each ear on an angle at the base (see pic above) and apply glue under the fold to keep it in place.
{6} Glue the ears to the plaited head band (see pic above). At this stage it would be a good idea to test the head band on your child’s head to triple check the sizing and then stitch both ends of the head band together. Et voila, all done!
PS: This if my first tutorial so I hope it is realtively easy to follow. If you have any questions ask away in the comments and I will do my best to clarify any points.
